James Hardie Siding vs. Alside Ascend Composite: Which Is Better?

Which Is Better James Hardie Siding vs. Alside Ascend Composite Schoenherr Roofing and Siding Michigan

Table of Contents

When homeowners begin researching premium siding products, two names increasingly rise to the top of the conversation: James Hardie fiber cement siding and Alside ASCEND composite cladding.

Both products are designed to deliver long-term durability, curb appeal, and improved weather resistance compared to traditional vinyl siding. But they achieve those goals in very different ways. Neither is an inherently better option, which means choosing between the two often comes down to a few key factors that we’ll outline below.

What Is James Hardie Siding?

James Hardie siding is a fiber cement product made from cement, sand, water, and cellulose fibers. It has become one of the most recognized premium siding materials in the United States because of its strength, longevity, and traditional wood-like appearance.

James Hardie products are especially known for:

  • Excellent resistance to moisture and rot
  • Strong fire resistance
  • Durable baked-on ColorPlus finishes
  • A realistic cedar-mill texture
  • Long service life when properly installed

Fiber cement siding has been widely used for decades and has built a strong reputation for performance in demanding climates, like those we experience in Michigan.

What Is Alside ASCEND Composite Cladding?

Alside ASCEND is a newer premium composite siding product that combines glass-reinforced polymers with graphite-infused insulation and mineral components to create a lightweight, insulated cladding system.

ASCEND was designed to bridge the gap between traditional vinyl siding and premium fiber cement products by offering:

  • Improved energy efficiency
  • Lightweight installation
  • Reduced maintenance requirements
  • Strong fade resistance
  • Enhanced moisture resistance
  • A wood-inspired appearance

Because ASCEND includes integrated insulation, it also offers some thermal performance benefits that standard fiber cement products generally do not provide.

Factors to Consider When Deciding Between James Hardie Siding and Alside ASCEND Composite

Several factors can influence whether James Hardie or Alside ASCEND is the better fit for a particular home.

While both products are considered premium siding systems, they differ in areas like appearance, insulation value, installation requirements, maintenance demands, and overall cost. Understanding those differences can help homeowners make a more confident long-term investment decision.

Appearance and Curb Appeal

Both products are considered high-quality siding systems, and both can dramatically improve a home’s appearance.

James Hardie tends to appeal to homeowners looking for a more traditional, architectural appearance. The texture, shadow lines, trim options, and overall finish often resemble painted wood siding more closely than many competing products.

ASCEND, meanwhile, offers a cleaner and somewhat more modern appearance. Many homeowners appreciate its deep colors, uniform finish, and crisp installation lines.

From a curb appeal standpoint, neither product is objectively better than the other. Instead, you’ll want to make your choice based on:

  • The style of your home
  • The surrounding neighborhood
  • Your desired color palette
  • The architectural details of your house
  • Whether you would prefer a traditional or contemporary aesthetic

In many upscale neighborhoods throughout Southeast Michigan, both products are commonly used successfully.

Durability and Weather Resistance

Michigan weather can be extremely demanding on exterior materials. Homes in the region routinely experience everything from freeze-thaw cycles and heavy snow to wind-driven rain, high summer humidity, and intense UV exposure.

James Hardie siding is widely respected for its durability in harsh climates. Fiber cement resists rot, insects, warping, and fire exceptionally well. It also performs well in wet environments when properly installed and maintained.

ASCEND also performs well in moisture-prone environments and is engineered to resist swelling, cracking, and many common siding issues associated with older materials. Its composite design is highly moisture-resistant and lightweight.

One notable difference involves impact resistance. Fiber cement is extremely hard and durable, but it can occasionally crack under severe impact. Composite siding products typically flex a bit more under impact, slightly reducing the chances of cracks.

Fire Resistance

For some homeowners, fire resistance is an important consideration.

James Hardie fiber cement siding is non-combustible and will not ignite when exposed to direct flame. This makes it the preferred choice for those in fire-prone areas. Meanwhile, ASCEND offers improved fire resistance compared to traditional vinyl siding, but it is not considered non-combustible in the same way fiber cement is.

For homeowners specifically prioritizing maximum fire resistance, James Hardie has the clear edge here.

Energy Efficiency

This is one area where ASCEND often stands out.

Because ASCEND includes integrated insulated backing, it can provide better thermal performance than standard non-insulated siding systems. That may help reduce thermal bridging, improve wall-system efficiency, enhance comfort near exterior walls, and slightly improve energy performance.

James Hardie siding itself does not provide substantial insulating value. Any insulation benefits would typically come from separate house wrap or foam board installed beneath the siding.

That does not necessarily make Hardie inefficient — but ASCEND was specifically engineered with insulation as part of the system.

Maintenance Requirements

Both products are considered relatively low-maintenance products compared to traditional wood siding.

However, ASCEND generally requires less long-term maintenance overall. Because ASCEND’s color is integrated into the product and designed for long-term fade resistance, homeowners typically do not need repainting. Cleaning requirements are also fairly minimal.

James Hardie products with ColorPlus finishes are also designed for excellent color retention, but fiber cement siding may eventually require repainting or touch-up work over the course of its lifespan.

For homeowners prioritizing minimal upkeep, ASCEND is often more appealing.

Installation Differences

Installation is one of the largest practical differences between the two products.

James Hardie siding is substantially heavier than ASCEND and requires specialized installation methods, cutting tools, fastening practices, and moisture-management details. Proper installation is critical for long-term performance and warranty compliance.

ASCEND is much lighter and uses an interlocking installation system that can simplify labor and reduce installation time. That lighter weight can also reduce labor demands, speed up installation, reduce project costs, and simplify on-site handling.

However, installation quality matters tremendously for both systems. Even premium siding products can underperform if improperly installed.

Cost Differences

In most cases, James Hardie siding costs more than ASCEND composite cladding. That higher cost is usually driven by the material pricing, increased labor requirements, and longer installation timelines.

ASCEND, on the other hand, is generally more affordable and typically falls into a middle ground between premium vinyl siding and fiber cement pricing.

That said, pricing varies significantly based on your home’s size, the trim complexity, whether you need existing siding removed, and the architectural details of your house.

For some homeowners, Hardie’s reputation and fire resistance justify the added investment. For others, ASCEND’s lower maintenance and lower installation costs make it the more attractive value.

James Hardie Siding vs. Alside Ascend Composite Which Is Better Siding Comparison Products James Hardie Schoenherr Roofing Michigan

James Hardie vs Alside ASCEND: Which Siding Is Better?

There is no universal winner for every home.

James Hardie may be the better fit for homeowners who prioritize:

  • Proven long-term track record
  • Traditional wood-like appearance
  • Exceptional fire resistance
  • Premium architectural aesthetics
  • Maximum durability

ASCEND may be the better choice for homeowners who prioritize:

  • Lower maintenance
  • Faster installation
  • Improved insulation performance
  • Lightweight materials
  • Lower overall project cost

Both products are considered major upgrades over builder-grade siding materials. The best siding choice ultimately depends on your goals, budget, home style, and long-term priorities.

James Hardie vs. ASCEND Composite Siding: FAQ

Choosing between two premium siding systems naturally raises a lot of questions. Below are some of the most common things Southeast Michigan homeowners ask when comparing James Hardie fiber cement siding and Alside ASCEND composite cladding.

Is James Hardie siding better than ASCEND composite siding?

Not necessarily. Both are considered premium siding products, but they excel in different areas. James Hardie is often favored for its traditional appearance, fire resistance, and long-term durability, while ASCEND is frequently chosen for its lower maintenance requirements, integrated insulation, and lighter-weight installation system.

Which siding lasts longer: James Hardie or ASCEND?

Both products are designed for long service lives when properly installed and maintained. James Hardie fiber cement siding has a very long real-world track record dating back decades, while ASCEND is newer but engineered specifically for long-term performance and fade resistance.

Does James Hardie siding increase home value?

In many cases, yes. Premium fiber cement siding is widely viewed as a desirable exterior upgrade because of its durability, appearance, and reputation. High-quality siding replacement projects can improve curb appeal and may positively influence resale value, especially when paired with proper trim, insulation, and exterior design updates.

Is ASCEND siding energy efficient?

ASCEND generally offers better built-in thermal performance than many other siding options because it includes integrated insulated backing. That can help improve wall efficiency and reduce some heat transfer through exterior walls.

Which siding requires less maintenance?

ASCEND composite siding typically requires less long-term maintenance overall. Its finish is designed for strong fade resistance and generally does not require repainting. James Hardie siding is also relatively low maintenance, especially with ColorPlus finishes, but fiber cement may eventually require repainting or touch-up work over time.

Is fiber cement siding waterproof?

No siding system is completely waterproof on its own. James Hardie fiber cement siding is highly moisture-resistant, but proper flashing, drainage planes, house wrap, and installation techniques are critical to protecting the home from water intrusion. The same is true for composite siding systems like ASCEND.

Which siding is more expensive: James Hardie or Alside ASCEND?

In most cases, James Hardie siding costs more than ASCEND composite siding due to heavier materials, increased labor demands, and more specialized installation requirements. However, final pricing varies depending on the home’s size, architectural complexity, trim details, insulation upgrades, and local labor conditions.

Schoenner Roofing completed a full roof replacement for us, the experience was great. Our salesman Seth was professional and friendly, he completed a full inspection with video before sitting down with us to go over what we needed and what options we had. There was no high pressure sales and we felt comfortable. The team kept us up to date during permitting process and double checked our material choices with us. Our project manager Dan Blunden reached out to introduce himself early in the process. Dan came out to the house to cover the process with us and assure all of the material was on site the day before the crew came out. Dan worked closely with us to keep us up to date on project progress throughout, he provided pictures during the process, which was greatly appreciated. The crew was great, friendly and cleaned the grounds throughout the day. Our crew chief also kept us updated. Dan came back after the job was done and inspected the whole roof to assure it was done right, and proveded pictures of the detail you can't see from the ground. Would highly recommend Schoenner, they did a great job, were professional, and friendly.

I needed a roof replacement and called several local companies for quotes. I decided to hire Schoenherr roofing for a number of factors: 1) The salesman was very thorough in the initial roof inspection and explained what was needed in my new roof and what my current roof lacked. He went over the options in great detail without pressure, giving me time to analyze other bids. 2) Schoenherr roofing offered very competitive pricing and their workmanship warranty is outstanding compared to other contractors and transferable to future owners if your house is sold. 3) Being in the construction business myself, I know the importance of proper communication regarding scheduling, delivery, and timing of the project. Even when there was a slight delay due a previous job going a day longer than expected due to weather(which often happens in the industry), communication about the scheduling was immediate and thorough. 4) I had other family members and friends also use Schoenherr roofing in the past 3 years and was very impressed with how they percieved their new roof experience with them. I was impressed with the workmanship, looks, and cleanliness when their job was completed. 5) The crew foreman was very thorough and knowledgeable during my installation explaining the process. The crew manager was interested how the project was going and letting me know if there were any unforseens (damaged lumber) during the rip off and installation. I had a very positive experience with them. My new roof looks fantastic! I will gladly recommend them to anyone looking for a roofing contractor in the future!

Josh H. one of the guys that works there happens to live down the street from my mother and noticed she had a few missing shingles. During the roof inspection he temporarily patched it in to give her a few extra months until she can afford it. Absolutely wonderful guy and didn’t ask for a dime, just wanted to save her from extra damages.

I would 100% recommend them to anyone interested in their services! They had great communication skills. They kept us updated with scheduling and progress pictures of what was completed. One of the days we were surprised with a terrible storm that popped up in the middle of the tear off/install. Even with the 50+ mph winds and extreme rain the guys successfully tarped off our house with no leaks! Also, they're very reasonably priced and went to great lengths to protect our landscape. Thanks for a great experience!

Overall, we had a positive experience with our roof replacement, but a few issues kept it from being excellent. Scheduling was easy, the consultant was on time and prepared, and the quote and financing options were competitive. The crew arrived on time, worked efficiently, and completed the roof quickly, even with two existing layers to remove. We also appreciated the progress photos and prompt follow-up with the invoice, financing paperwork, and final inspection scheduling. Our main concerns were communication, cleanup, and safety. We did not receive a response when we asked for a dumpster delivery time, which made planning garage access difficult. We were also told the generator and A/C units would be covered, but they were not. We also observed that no one working on the roof appeared to be using fall protection, which was concerning for work over 6 feet. The roof itself appears to have been installed efficiently and professionally.

Absolutely thrilled with the work done by Schoenherr Roofing! I had been struggling with a leaking roof for a while, and after several failed attempts by other contractors, I finally found someone who not only diagnosed the problem but fixed it with precision and professionalism. The issue turned out to be the chimney area, and instead of just patching things up, Caleb took the time to build a cricket around the chimney to divert water and prevent future leaks. The craftsmanship is top-notch, and the work was completed efficiently without any mess or disruption to my daily routine. What really stood out was their clear communication and dedication to making sure everything was done right. They explained the entire process, answered all my questions, and took care to ensure that the repair would provide a long-lasting solution. Since the repair, I’ve had no further issues, even during heavy rainstorms. I can finally rest easy knowing my roof is in great shape! I highly recommend Schoenherr Roofing for anyone in need of roofing services—they are skilled, reliable, and genuinely care about doing the job right. Thank you Caleb for saving my home from further damage!

Install or Replace an Asphalt Shingle Roof Schoenherr worked from dawn to dusk to complete the project in a very timely fashion. They came in $1090 under budget, having finished the whole job within one work day and three hours. They provided photos of the roof halfway through the project and at completion ? I would have appreciated a few 'before' photos, too. They provided a group text so that everyone involved could communicate and stay looped in. My only other quibble is that the finance person always neglected to cc my wife on emails, even though the home-improvement loan is in her name. Finally, after wrapping up the project, Schoenherr put everything in both yards back in place and cleaned the site really well. Sometimes it's worth paying a little bit more for quality service and execution. Sometimes, it's not even that much more!
