Leonard sits just a short drive northwest of our Romeo headquarters at 102 W St Clair Street, only about eight to nine miles up into Addison Township. For a small rural village that most metro contractors treat as too far to bother with, that closeness matters. When a Leonard homeowner calls about a leak, our crew is coming from right down the road, not across the county.
That short drive keeps small problems small. On Leonard’s older homes, water can chase its way through original framing before it ever shows on a ceiling, so getting a technician on the roof quickly is what keeps a minor repair from becoming a soaked ceiling. Being headquartered nearby in Romeo is exactly why we can get out to Leonard fast.
Leonard is a village of under 400 people in the northeast corner of Addison Township, and it wears its history proudly. It grew up around the Pontiac, Oxford & Northern Railroad in the 1880s, took its name from businessman Leonard Rowland when the post office opened in 1884, and incorporated in 1889. The multi-story grain elevator and beanery built that same year still stands downtown, the subject of an ongoing effort to save it, and the village works hard to keep its rural, historic character intact.
That heritage shows on the rooftops. Leonard is full of preserved 19th-century and early-1900s homes with steep, detailed rooflines, mixed in with farmhouses and newer rural builds on larger lots. From ornate old village homes to open-country farmhouses, it’s exactly the kind of older, varied housing stock where roof repair takes real experience. Many of these homes have stood through more than a century of Michigan winters, and their roofs carry the layered repairs and aging flashing that come with that kind of history.
On the historic village homes, leaks almost always start at the details rather than the open shingles. Worn chimney flashing, aging step flashing at the many wall-to-roof transitions, and tired valley metal are the classic failure points, and on a preserved century-old home water can travel a long way through old framing before it shows inside. Decades of re-roofing can also leave layered materials and brittle underlayment hiding underneath.
The open, rural setting adds its own stresses. Farmhouses and homes on open lots take wind with no windbreak, so we find lifted shingles and loosened ridge caps after storms, while wooded rural properties collect limbs and leaf litter in their valleys. Michigan’s freeze-thaw winters pry at any loose joint and drive ice dams onto the eaves of older, under-insulated homes. Caught early, almost all of it is a repair, and on a historic Leonard home an early inspection protects both the roof and the character underneath it.
In a village this small and this tight-knit, a contractor’s reputation is everything, because everyone hears how a job went. That keeps us honest. We’d rather reflash a historic roof correctly once than be the name a Leonard homeowner warns a neighbor about. We’ve served Southeast Michigan from our Romeo base since 1995, and rural communities like Leonard are exactly the kind we were built to reach.
Roof problems are never pleasant. Keeping your roof well-maintained is crucial to protecting your home—and Schoenherr Roofing is just a phone call away. Deciding between a simple repair or a full replacement starts with assessing the damage. Factors like roof type, age, and the severity of the issue all play a role.
At Schoenherr Roofing, we perform comprehensive inspections on all roof types, from asphalt shingles to metal roofs. We identify visible issues like missing shingles and hidden problems such as attic leaks. Our experienced team offers customized solutions to restore your roof’s strength and integrity.
Leonard, MI experiences extreme seasonal changes—scorching summers and freezing winters—that can gradually wear down your roof, especially if it’s made of common materials like asphalt shingles.
Strong winds can lift or tear off shingles, exposing your roof to leaks. Snow accumulation can lead to ice dams, which block proper drainage and cause water to seep into your home.
Delaying repairs often leads to bigger, more expensive problems. Tackling issues early helps protect your home and avoid costly replacements.
Unsure when to call a roofer? Some signs are easy to notice, while others are more subtle. Missing, cracked, or curling shingles can indicate wear and tear. Water stains on your ceilings or walls might point to a leak. A sagging roofline could suggest structural issues, and granules from shingles in your gutters may signal aging.
Moss or algae growth on your roof could mean trapped moisture. If your asphalt shingle roof is 20–25 years old, it’s wise to schedule a professional inspection to determine how much longer it will last.

Not at all. Leonard is only about eight to nine miles from our Romeo headquarters, so it’s close to home for us even though many metro contractors treat it as out of range. We schedule Leonard repairs with the same urgency as any closer town, because a leak damages an old roof just as fast in a small village as anywhere else.
Yes. Leonard’s preserved railroad-era and early-1900s homes have steep, detailed rooflines with plenty of valleys, dormers, and flashing joints that need careful access and detailed work. We repair those complex older roofs, reseal the flashing and valleys, and blend the shingle work in so the fix seals without disturbing the home’s historic character.
On Leonard’s century-old homes, the shingles often still look fine while the actual leak is coming from worn chimney flashing, aging step flashing, or tired valley metal. Those detailed rooflines have many wall-to-roof transitions, and each one is a place water can enter. We trace the leak to the real joint and repair it rather than patching the ceiling stain beneath it.
Yes. Beyond the village core, Leonard and the surrounding Addison Township are full of farmhouses and rural homes on open and wooded lots. Those properties often take more wind on exposed roofs and more tree debris on shaded ones, and our crews are equipped to access and repair roofs in those rural conditions.
Homes on open lots and farmland around Leonard take wind with no windbreak to slow it down, which lifts and tears shingles and loosens ridge caps. After a storm we look for missing and creased shingles, exposed nail heads, and damaged flashing, then make the roof watertight and repair the affected sections before water gets into the deck.
Our Romeo headquarters is only about eight to nine miles from Leonard, so we can usually get out quickly. For an active leak we prioritize getting on the roof, making it watertight the same visit when needed, then scheduling the permanent repair. Being based nearby is exactly why Leonard homeowners don’t have to wait while water keeps working into old framing.

Our experience with Schoenherr Roofing has been very pleasant. Our sales consultant, Nate and project manager, Josh H. were both professional and personable. We were very impressed with the excellent communication by Josh before, during, and after our project. The cleanup the roofing crew did was also outstanding. Josh H. one of the guys that works there happens to live down the street from my mother and noticed she had a few missing shingles. During the roof inspection he temporarily patched it in to give her a few extra months until she can afford it. Absolutely wonderful guy and didn’t ask for a dime, just wanted to save her from extra damages.Posted on Google![]()

I would 100% recommend them to anyone interested in their services! They had great communication skills. They kept us updated with scheduling and progress pictures of what was completed. One of the days we were surprised with a terrible storm that popped up in the middle of the tear off/install. Even with the 50+ mph winds and extreme rain the guys successfully tarped off our house with no leaks! Also, they're very reasonably priced and went to great lengths to protect our landscape. Thanks for a great experience!Posted on Google![]()

I contacted Schoenherr Roofing for an estimated on replacing my roof. They sent David Schafer to my residence. Dave explained his process. He entered the attic and videoed while speaking the issues he sees. He then got on my roof and videoed everything. I also had the shed looked at. When Dave was completed, he had a video that I could see. His findings and video explaining everything was great. Dave was very professional, polite and courteous. He answered all my questions. He came prepared with what he needed to do his job. Today we happy our roof was replaced by Schoenherr Roofing! They replaced the shingles on the house, garage and shed. On the house, all wood decking was replaced with a few on the garage. Ridge vent installed on the house and garage. Crew was here early as schedule and on time. I watched this five man crew work constantly with a break for lunch. My home is a two story colonial. This crew had to carry all the lumber and shingles to the top of the roof. Shingles carried up to top of the garage as. The crew leader (Luis) was very polite. He took pictures throughout sending them to his boss Chad. Chad then forward them to me to keep me up to date. Even views from the top of the roof where I couldn’t see. The crew did an outstanding job cleaning the area upon completion. All of this work by 5 men in one day (12 hrs). I could not have asked for a better experience. Thank You to everyone involved a Schoenherr Roofing!!Posted on Google![]()

After doing some research and sifting through high presdure sales tactics from other vendors, i chose Schoenherr roofing. All of their laborers are in house employees versus 3rd party contractors. After commiting they assigned several people and kept me in the loop. During the tear out and install i was given pictoral updates on every aspect of the job, their pricing was in line with their competitors and they used state of the art materials designed for specific aspects versus 1 shingle does all. Best of all was material usage had no hidden addons and we stayed within budget, i believe 200 Lft of planking was in the quote and we used 160. No upsell on anything or special pricing tiers of quality, i got app. 1600 sqft of tier 3 impact shingled roof for $15,000.00 With drip edge and needed planking and the latest in ventilation technology. You can see in one picture the original roof in poor shape.Posted on Google![]()

Their sales rep, Leo, is helpful, knowledgeable, and professional. He is clearly dedicated to his customers and is someone I could trust to provide me with an honest understanding of the whole project and its pricing. I received 5 different quotes from various local and chain roofing contractors. Schoenherr Roofing is slightly more expensive than average but their services, from start to finish, were above average. I was kept in the loop regarding every step of the process which included financing, a flexible appointment time, a pre-install and post-install inspection, material delivery, install, and clean-up. At every step they were prompt and thorough. The crew was extremely hard working and were able to set up, replace a house and garage roof, clean, and pack up in about 12 hours despite the heat. They provided me with real-time photos of their work as each step of the install was completed, which is something all construction contractors should take note of. I am happy that I paid a bit extra for the peace of mind I now have in a roof with a strong labor and material warranty installed by an experienced local business.Posted on Google![]()

Overall, we had a positive experience with our roof replacement, but a few issues kept it from being excellent. Scheduling was easy, the consultant was on time and prepared, and the quote and financing options were competitive. The crew arrived on time, worked efficiently, and completed the roof quickly, even with two existing layers to remove. We also appreciated the progress photos and prompt follow-up with the invoice, financing paperwork, and final inspection scheduling. Our main concerns were communication, cleanup, and safety. We did not receive a response when we asked for a dumpster delivery time, which made planning garage access difficult. We were also told the generator and A/C units would be covered, but they were not. We also observed that no one working on the roof appeared to be using fall protection, which was concerning for work over 6 feet. The roof itself appears to have been installed efficiently and professionally.Posted on Angie's List![]()

Absolutely thrilled with the work done by Schoenherr Roofing! I had been struggling with a leaking roof for a while, and after several failed attempts by other contractors, I finally found someone who not only diagnosed the problem but fixed it with precision and professionalism. The issue turned out to be the chimney area, and instead of just patching things up, Caleb took the time to build a cricket around the chimney to divert water and prevent future leaks. The craftsmanship is top-notch, and the work was completed efficiently without any mess or disruption to my daily routine. What really stood out was their clear communication and dedication to making sure everything was done right. They explained the entire process, answered all my questions, and took care to ensure that the repair would provide a long-lasting solution. Since the repair, I’ve had no further issues, even during heavy rainstorms. I can finally rest easy knowing my roof is in great shape! I highly recommend Schoenherr Roofing for anyone in need of roofing services—they are skilled, reliable, and genuinely care about doing the job right. Thank you Caleb for saving my home from further damage!Posted on Home Advisor![]()

Install or Replace an Asphalt Shingle Roof Schoenherr worked from dawn to dusk to complete the project in a very timely fashion. They came in $1090 under budget, having finished the whole job within one work day and three hours. They provided photos of the roof halfway through the project and at completion ? I would have appreciated a few 'before' photos, too. They provided a group text so that everyone involved could communicate and stay looped in. My only other quibble is that the finance person always neglected to cc my wife on emails, even though the home-improvement loan is in her name. Finally, after wrapping up the project, Schoenherr put everything in both yards back in place and cleaned the site really well. Sometimes it's worth paying a little bit more for quality service and execution. Sometimes, it's not even that much more!Posted on Home Advisor![]()
