Nunica sits in rural Crockery Township in northern Ottawa County, about twenty-eight miles west of our office at 2828 Kraft Avenue SE, the closest Schoenherr location. It’s a country community near the crossroads of I-96, M-104, and M-231, and it’s part of the West Michigan area our crews cover, so a Nunica roof problem gets real attention rather than sitting because it’s out in the country.
On the farmhouses and rural homes that make up Nunica, water can work through original framing before it ever shows inside. We plan the trip out efficiently and get a technician on the roof to trace the leak quickly, because the sooner we do, the smaller and cheaper the repair stays.
Nunica is a small, historic country community with a name straight out of the region’s past. First settled in the 1830s and known early on as Crockery Creek, it took the name Nunica in 1859, from an Ottawa word meaning clay earth, the same pottery clay that gave nearby Crockery Creek its name. Platted in 1865 and set among the farmland and woods of Crockery Township near the Grand River, it has stayed a quiet rural community rather than growing into a suburb.
That rural character shapes the roofs. Nunica is mostly farmhouses and rural homes on open and wooded lots, mixed with newer country builds, rather than uniform subdivisions. From century-old farmhouses to modern country homes, it’s exactly the kind of spread-out rural housing where getting a roofer to make the trip is half the battle.
The open, rural setting is the main story here. Farmhouses and homes on open lots take wind with no windbreak, so we find lifted shingles and loosened ridge caps after storms, and a single storm can mark several properties across the open country at once. Wooded rural lots collect falling limbs and leaf litter in their valleys and grow moss on shaded north slopes.
The older farmhouses bring the classic problems of aging homes, worn chimney and step flashing and tired valley metal where the real leaks start, and decades of re-roofing can hide brittle underlayment underneath. Nunica also sits close enough to Lake Michigan to catch the lake-effect snowbelt, so heavy snow melts and refreezes at the eaves into ice dams that back water up under the shingles. Out here, where the nearest neighbor may be a field away, catching that early matters even more, since there’s no one next door to spot a problem starting on your roof. Most of it is repairable when caught early, and a quick inspection after a big storm is the cheapest insurance a Nunica homeowner can buy.
Out in a rural community like Nunica, a contractor’s name gets around fast, because neighbors talk and there aren’t many roofers who make the trip. We’d rather earn that word-of-mouth by fixing the roof correctly than lose it by cutting a corner on a farmhouse well out in the country. That’s the standard we’ve held since 1995, however far the drive.
Nunica’s weather puts a heavy strain on roofs. Hot, humid summers and long, icy winters can break down even the toughest roofing systems. Strong winds and storms can crack or tear off shingles, while heavy rain and ice buildup often lead to leaks or structural damage. Clogged gutters make matters worse, causing water to back up and increasing the risk of mold.
Catching these problems early can save you a lot of money. If you spot any signs of damage, call a professional roofer right away—before a small issue turns into an expensive repair.
Nunica’s weather puts serious pressure on roofs. In the summer, the hot sun dries out asphalt shingles, making them brittle and more likely to crack. Heavy rain or hail can clog gutters, pushing water under the shingles and leading to leaks.
Winter brings even tougher conditions. Snow and ice add significant weight to your roof, which can cause major damage. The freeze-and-thaw cycle makes things worse, as expanding and contracting ice creates cracks that grow over time.
That’s why regular roof inspections are essential, especially after severe weather. They allow you to spot small problems early—before they turn into expensive repairs.

Choose Roof Repairs If:
The damage is minor, like a few missing shingles
Your roof is still fairly new and in good condition overall
A small leak is confined to one repairable area
Consider Roof Replacement If:
Your roof is more than 20 years old and showing heavy wear
A large section of the roof has been damaged
Repair costs are close to the price of a full replacement
Not sure which option is right for you? Our experts will explain your choices and recommend the solution that best fits your home’s needs.
The cost of roof repair depends on several factors, including the roofing material, how complex the project is, and how accessible the roof may be. Asphalt shingles are typically the most affordable choice, while slate or metal often raise the overall price.
Steep roofs or those with intricate designs often need specialized tools and extra skill, which can also drive up costs. Knowing these details helps homeowners set realistic expectations and plan repairs that align with both their budget and long-term goals.
Roofing Material Options
Asphalt shingles – A cost-effective and widely used option.
Slate or tile – Pricier, but extremely durable and long-lasting.
Knowing the price differences helps homeowners pick the material that best fits their budget.
Roof Size
Larger roofs need more materials, which drives up the overall cost. Extra shingles, underlayment, and other components all contribute to the expense.
Roof Complexity
Roofs with multiple slopes, dormers, or detailed designs take more time and skill to complete. This added complexity increases both material and labor costs.
Michigan’s changing seasons have a big impact on roofing projects and their cost. Winter brings snow, ice, and freezing temperatures that make roofing challenging and sometimes unsafe. During this time, contractors are often harder to book, and prices may increase because of the extra difficulties.
Spring and fall are generally the best times to schedule roofing work. Mild weather and less rain allow projects to move along more smoothly, which usually means better contractor availability and lower costs.
By planning with these seasonal factors in mind, homeowners can save money, avoid delays, and ensure their roofing projects are completed more efficiently.
Deciding whether your roof needs a repair or a full replacement brings plenty of benefits. The right choice can save you money over time and give you peace of mind. Quick repairs can stop small issues from turning into major problems that may require an expensive replacement. While repair costs vary depending on the damage, they’re almost always less than the cost of a full roof replacement.
Choosing the right service keeps your roof doing what it’s meant to—protecting your home from leaks, mold, and the expensive problems that come with a failing roof. DIY fixes might seem simple, but it’s always best to rely on a professional roofing contractor for straightforward advice and dependable service.
Caring for your roof is really an investment in your home’s value and your peace of mind. Worried about your roof? Contact Schoenherr Roofing today for a free inspection and expert guidance.
Yes. Our Grand Rapids office is the closest Schoenherr location to Nunica, about twenty-eight miles east, and we cover this part of rural Ottawa County. A Nunica roof leak gets scheduled with real urgency, because water damages a country roof just as fast as a city one, and we plan the trip out efficiently rather than letting the distance become a delay.
Yes. Nunica and the surrounding Crockery Township are mostly farmhouses and rural homes on large open and wooded lots, and that’s much of what we repair out here. Those properties take more wind on exposed roofs and more tree debris on shaded ones, and our crews are equipped to access and repair roofs in rural conditions from our Grand Rapids base.
On older Nunica farmhouses, leaks usually trace back to worn chimney flashing, aging step flashing, and tired valley metal rather than the open field of shingles, and decades of re-roofing can hide brittle underlayment underneath. We trace the leak to the real entry point and repair it rather than patching the stain below it, so the fix actually stops the water.
Homes on open farmland around Nunica take wind with no windbreak to slow it down, which lifts and tears shingles, loosens ridge caps, and can mark several open-country properties in a single storm. After a storm we look for missing and creased shingles, exposed nail heads, and damaged flashing, then make the roof watertight and repair the affected sections before water gets into the deck.
It does. Nunica sits close enough to Lake Michigan to catch the lake-effect snowbelt, so it sees heavier snow than areas farther inland. On homes with thin attic insulation, that snow melts and refreezes at the eaves into ice dams that push water back up under the shingles. We repair the resulting leaks and can point out the insulation and ventilation gaps that let the dams form.
Our Grand Rapids office is about twenty-eight miles east of Nunica. We plan rural trips efficiently, so the distance shapes our routing rather than delaying the work. For an active leak we prioritize getting the roof watertight quickly, then schedule the permanent repair.

Overall, we had a positive experience with our roof replacement, but a few issues kept it from being excellent. Scheduling was easy, the consultant was on time and prepared, and the quote and financing options were competitive. The crew arrived on time, worked efficiently, and completed the roof quickly, even with two existing layers to remove. We also appreciated the progress photos and prompt follow-up with the invoice, financing paperwork, and final inspection scheduling. Our main concerns were communication, cleanup, and safety. We did not receive a response when we asked for a dumpster delivery time, which made planning garage access difficult. We were also told the generator and A/C units would be covered, but they were not. We also observed that no one working on the roof appeared to be using fall protection, which was concerning for work over 6 feet. The roof itself appears to have been installed efficiently and professionally.Posted on Angie's List![]()

Absolutely thrilled with the work done by Schoenherr Roofing! I had been struggling with a leaking roof for a while, and after several failed attempts by other contractors, I finally found someone who not only diagnosed the problem but fixed it with precision and professionalism. The issue turned out to be the chimney area, and instead of just patching things up, Caleb took the time to build a cricket around the chimney to divert water and prevent future leaks. The craftsmanship is top-notch, and the work was completed efficiently without any mess or disruption to my daily routine. What really stood out was their clear communication and dedication to making sure everything was done right. They explained the entire process, answered all my questions, and took care to ensure that the repair would provide a long-lasting solution. Since the repair, I’ve had no further issues, even during heavy rainstorms. I can finally rest easy knowing my roof is in great shape! I highly recommend Schoenherr Roofing for anyone in need of roofing services—they are skilled, reliable, and genuinely care about doing the job right. Thank you Caleb for saving my home from further damage!Posted on Home Advisor![]()

Install or Replace an Asphalt Shingle Roof Schoenherr worked from dawn to dusk to complete the project in a very timely fashion. They came in $1090 under budget, having finished the whole job within one work day and three hours. They provided photos of the roof halfway through the project and at completion ? I would have appreciated a few 'before' photos, too. They provided a group text so that everyone involved could communicate and stay looped in. My only other quibble is that the finance person always neglected to cc my wife on emails, even though the home-improvement loan is in her name. Finally, after wrapping up the project, Schoenherr put everything in both yards back in place and cleaned the site really well. Sometimes it's worth paying a little bit more for quality service and execution. Sometimes, it's not even that much more!Posted on Home Advisor![]()
