Marne sits about 15 miles northwest of our Grand Rapids office on Kraft Ave SE, an easy 25-minute run out I-96. That keeps this Ottawa County community and the farm country around it well within our range. We can get out for a free estimate quickly, bring trucks and material without a long haul, and come back easily for a follow-up or warranty visit. When a storm hits, that reach also means a faster response instead of a long wait. For a rural community this close to the metro, a roofer who covers the area regularly is a real convenience.
Marne is an unincorporated community in Wright Township, settled heavily by German families and originally called Berlin. Platted in 1857 along Sand Creek, where early mills ran on the water, it kept the Berlin name until 1919, when anti-German sentiment during the First World War prompted a change to Marne, honoring soldiers who fought in the Second Battle of the Marne. The old name still lives on at the Berlin Raceway, the Berlin Fairgrounds, and the annual fair.
Wright Township remains a peaceful, rural place of family-run farms along sandy roads, with a small business district around the old interurban depot. That gives the area a practical housing mix: older homes near the community center, farmhouses and rural properties spread across the township, and the barns, pole barns, and outbuildings that come with working land, alongside newer homes filling in over time. It's a community that has kept its farming character even as Grand Rapids has grown out toward it.
West Michigan weather gives every roof around Marne a full four-season workout. Winter snow load and the freeze-thaw cycle drive meltwater under shingles and into flashing, and on older or under-insulated homes they build ice dams along the eaves. Out over the open, flat farmland, roofs catch wind with little to break it, along with the occasional hail that crosses the region most summers. It's a steady test for any roof out here.
The older farmhouses often reveal aging decking, past additions, and layered roofing once the tear-off begins, and their large, exposed roof planes need materials and fastening suited to the wind they face. Pole barns and outbuildings add big spans where metal roofing frequently pays off. Sound flashing, fresh underlayment, and proper attic ventilation are what carry a Marne roof through the seasons, whether it's on the house, the garage, or the barn. Because the wind has so little to break it out here, we pay extra attention to fastening and to the starter and edge courses, where an open-country roof is most likely to lift in a strong gust.
We work this stretch of Ottawa County regularly, so the roofs we install around Marne are ones we pass again and again. In a smaller, tight-knit community, a roof that leaks a year later is the kind of thing everyone hears about, so we build each one to last and stand behind it. That follow-through is exactly what you want from a roofer who's genuinely nearby.
Homeowners often ask when they should start thinking about a new roof. Here are a few key signs:
Shingles that are curled, cracked, crumbling, or missing
Water stains appearing on ceilings or walls inside your home
Moss, mold, or algae growing on the roof
A roof that’s more than 20 years old
Significant storm damage
Considering starting fresh or adding a roof to an existing structure?
Typically done during new construction or home additions
Ensures full protection against the elements
Provides a durable, professionally installed roofing system built to last

This service is needed when your roofing system can no longer be repaired or has reached the end of its useful life. Signs that it may be time for a roof replacement include:
Aging Roof: Roofs over 20 years old often need replacement due to normal wear and material breakdown.
Visible Damage: Major issues such as missing shingles, large leaks, or sagging in the structure.
Frequent Repairs: If you’re dealing with constant fixes, a full replacement is usually the more cost-effective solution.
Choosing Schoenherr Roofing’s replacement services means investing in your home’s safety and longevity. Our skilled team makes sure your new roof not only boosts your property’s curb appeal but also delivers strong, reliable protection against the elements.

Both roof installation and roof replacement give you a new roof, but the process, cost, and factors to consider are very different.
Roof Installation:
Ideal for new construction or major renovations
Offers more flexibility in design and material options
No old roofing to remove, making it a cleaner and simpler process
Roof Replacement:
Requires removing and replacing the existing roof
May call for structural reinforcements or code upgrades
Can boost energy efficiency and increase property value
Bottom Line: If you’re building a new home or adding on, installation is the best choice. If your current roof is old or too damaged to repair, replacement is the smarter investment for long-term protection and performance.
The cost of roof installation or repair can vary based on a few key factors, including the type of roofing material, the complexity of the project, and the roof’s accessibility. For example, asphalt shingles are typically more affordable than slate or metal roofing, which directly impacts the total cost.
Roofs with steep slopes or intricate designs often require specialized tools and added expertise, which can increase labor expenses. By understanding these factors, homeowners can make informed decisions that align with both their budget and long-term goals.
Roofing Material Choices:
Asphalt shingles – Affordable and widely used.
Slate or tile – Higher cost but extremely durable.
Knowing the price differences helps homeowners choose the option that best fits their budget.
Roof Size:
Larger roofs need more materials, which raises the overall cost.
Extra shingles, underlayment, and components all add to expenses.
Roof Complexity:
Roofs with multiple slopes, dormers, or detailed designs take more time and skilled labor.
Increased complexity drives up both material and labor costs.
In Michigan, seasonal changes have a big impact on roofing projects and their costs. Winter brings snow, ice, and freezing temperatures that can make roof work unsafe—or sometimes impossible. Because of this, contractor availability is limited and rates are often higher.
Spring and fall are generally the best seasons for roofing. With milder weather and less rain, projects can be completed more smoothly, usually at lower costs, and with more contractors available.
By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, homeowners can plan their roofing projects more effectively, save money, and ensure the work is finished efficiently.
Choosing the right service for your roof, whether it’s a new installation or replacement, offers numerous benefits. It can save you money in the long run and provide peace of mind. Quick repairs can stop small issues from becoming major problems that require costly replacements. While repair costs vary depending on the damage, they are generally more affordable than full replacements.
Selecting the right service ensures your roof effectively protects your home, preventing water damage, mold growth, and other issues caused by a damaged roof. Although DIY repairs may seem tempting, it’s crucial to consult a professional roofing contractor for trustworthy advice and quality service.
Remember, investing in your roof is also an investment in your home’s value and your peace of mind. Concerned about your roof? Contact Schoenherr Roofing today for a free inspection and expert recommendations.
Yes. Our Grand Rapids office at 2828 Kraft Ave SE is about 15 miles southeast of Marne, an easy 25-minute run out I-96, so we serve the community and the surrounding Wright Township regularly. You can reach the office at (616) 421-9687. That keeps estimates, installations, and follow-up visits convenient.
Yes. The Marne area is largely rural, with family-run farms across Wright Township, and we regularly work on farmhouses and rural homes along with their barns, pole barns, and outbuildings. Rural roofs come with their own considerations, from long, open roof planes to older framing, and we’re set up to handle the whole property.
Older farmhouses around Marne often reveal aging or plank decking, past additions, and layered roofing once the tear-off begins. Their large, exposed roof planes also need materials and fastening suited to the open-country wind they face. We inspect the decking closely and build the roof to handle both the age of the home and its exposure.
Yes. Along with homes, we roof pole barns, detached garages, and other outbuildings common on Marne-area properties. Metal roofing is frequently a practical, long-lasting choice for these larger, simpler roof spans, and we can roof an outbuilding on its own or as part of a whole-property project.
On the open, flat lots common around Marne, roofs take wind with little to break it, along with winter snow load, the freeze-thaw cycle, and the occasional hail that crosses the region. That exposure makes wind-rated shingles, tight edge and starter detailing, and solid fastening especially important for keeping a roof intact through a strong gust.
Yes. We provide free, no-obligation roof estimates for homeowners in Marne and across Wright Township, including a full inspection and an honest recommendation on whether you need a repair or a replacement. We’re glad to make the short drive out for a look.

Alex and the Schoenherr Roofing crew did a really good job on our new roof, which is somewhat complicated with several gables, a portion that is flat and another area with a 2-12 pitch. We weren't able to be present during the work but Project Manager Dan routinely communicated by sending texts and photos. The 350 sq ft flat roof received a custom rebuild, using the EPDM system which created new low slopes with insulating board underneath. The crew did a great job installing a new skylite and installing the Deck-Air vent system for the house's low slopes. The rows of shingles are straight as are the ridge vents and Deck-Air vents. The dumpster was brought in as a large 4 wheeled trailer, so there was no effect on our asphalt, and it was removed promptly. Alex and his crew replaced rotten OSB and 1 x 6 roof boards, and improved a chimney flashing and cricket which has been a problem for years. They were careful of landscaping. Most of the work was done in about 2 days. The new roof looks great and we can certainly recommend Schoenherr Roofing.Posted on Google![]()

I had a top notch experience with this company. I was communicated with every step of the way. I had to have all new wood as well as shingles and doubted that it would be finished in one day, but it was. They also did a stellar clean-up job at the end. Overall, we had a positive experience with our roof replacement, but a few issues kept it from being excellent. Scheduling was easy, the consultant was on time and prepared, and the quote and financing options were competitive. The crew arrived on time, worked efficiently, and completed the roof quickly, even with two existing layers to remove. We also appreciated the progress photos and prompt follow-up with the invoice, financing paperwork, and final inspection scheduling. Our main concerns were communication, cleanup, and safety. We did not receive a response when we asked for a dumpster delivery time, which made planning garage access difficult. We were also told the generator and A/C units would be covered, but they were not. We also observed that no one working on the roof appeared to be using fall protection, which was concerning for work over 6 feet. The roof itself appears to have been installed efficiently and professionally.Posted on Angie's List![]()

Absolutely thrilled with the work done by Schoenherr Roofing! I had been struggling with a leaking roof for a while, and after several failed attempts by other contractors, I finally found someone who not only diagnosed the problem but fixed it with precision and professionalism. The issue turned out to be the chimney area, and instead of just patching things up, Caleb took the time to build a cricket around the chimney to divert water and prevent future leaks. The craftsmanship is top-notch, and the work was completed efficiently without any mess or disruption to my daily routine. What really stood out was their clear communication and dedication to making sure everything was done right. They explained the entire process, answered all my questions, and took care to ensure that the repair would provide a long-lasting solution. Since the repair, I’ve had no further issues, even during heavy rainstorms. I can finally rest easy knowing my roof is in great shape! I highly recommend Schoenherr Roofing for anyone in need of roofing services—they are skilled, reliable, and genuinely care about doing the job right. Thank you Caleb for saving my home from further damage!Posted on Home Advisor![]()

Install or Replace an Asphalt Shingle Roof Schoenherr worked from dawn to dusk to complete the project in a very timely fashion. They came in $1090 under budget, having finished the whole job within one work day and three hours. They provided photos of the roof halfway through the project and at completion ? I would have appreciated a few 'before' photos, too. They provided a group text so that everyone involved could communicate and stay looped in. My only other quibble is that the finance person always neglected to cc my wife on emails, even though the home-improvement loan is in her name. Finally, after wrapping up the project, Schoenherr put everything in both yards back in place and cleaned the site really well. Sometimes it's worth paying a little bit more for quality service and execution. Sometimes, it's not even that much more!Posted on Home Advisor![]()
