Discovering the Benefits of Ice and Water Shield & How it Protects Your Roof

Benefits of Ice Water Shield and How it Protects Your Roof Owens Corning x Schoenherr Roofing Partner

Table of Contents

In cold-weather climates, Ice and Water Shield is mandatory for keeping your roof safe from leaks and water damage. This roofing underlayment acts as a waterproof barrier. It stops problems that can come from ice dams, tough weather, and water getting into your roof. Homeowners and roofing contractors often count on this shield to keep important parts of the roof protected. If you are putting on a new roof or fixing the one you have now, it is good to know the uses and benefits of Ice and Water Shield. This can help give you peace of mind that your home will stay safe from water trouble.

Many homeowners pick this roofing underlayment because it has an adhesive back that grabs tightly to the roof deck. It also has self-sealing features, so the membrane seals around nails. This leak protection works when there is strong wind or lots of rain. If you use it the right way, this shield keeps your roof safe from water. It gives you peace of mind knowing your home is better covered against storm damage and water penetration.

Key Benefits of Using Ice and Water Shield

Choosing Ice and Water Shield gives your home important protection from water damage and tough weather conditions. This shield keeps out water that can come in from things like ice dams or hard wind and rain. It makes a strong wall that blocks moisture and stops water intrusion.

Using this underlayment can help make your roof last longer because it keeps leaks and damage from happening. You will not need to worry about roof replacement or repairs as often. These features give homeowners peace of mind that their roof can stand up to severe storms.

Protection Against Water Damage

Water damage can be a big problem for homeowners. It can lead to costly repairs and can even cause trouble with the structure of your house. The Ice and Water Shield helps protect your home by giving you a strong shield against water intrusion. This is helpful when you deal with ice dams or when you have heavy rain.

The water shield works better than standard underlayment because it is a waterproof barrier that sticks to your roof. It is self-sealing, so there are no gaps for water to get in. When something, such as a nail, goes into the shield, it seals itself right away. This helps make sure those vulnerable areas stay safe. This way, homeowners get good protection, especially when the weather is rough.

Enhancing Roof Longevity

Putting in an Ice and Water Shield helps your roof last longer. This is great for people who live in places with a lot of severe weather. This underlayment keeps your home safe from leaks that come from ice dams and big rainstorms. It helps stop early roof replacement and damage from happening.

The membrane is tough and can handle harsh conditions. This helps stop shingle problems, rot, and too much moisture from building up. With this extra shield, you will not need to fix your roof as often. It gives homeowners peace of mind, so they don’t have to worry about water damage all the time. When you use this shield, your roof will stay strong for many years. Practical Application Guidelines for Ice and Water Shields

Comprehensive Installation Guide for Ice and Water Shield

Proper installation of Ice and Water Shield is important for it to work well. Homeowners need to make sure the roof deck is clean and dry. Take out all the moisture and any debris so that the shield sticks well. The shield needs to be placed on the weakest parts of the roof, like the valleys and the eaves. Be sure the shield overlaps on each layer, so it forms a strong, waterproof barrier.

It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If the shield is not put down the right way, it may not do its job like it should. In the next part, we will talk about how to get the roof ready and the steps to install the shield.

Preparing the Roof for Professional Installation

Even when you’re hiring a professional to install Ice and Water Shield, taking a few steps beforehand can help ensure the process goes smoothly and the results last. As a homeowner, preparing your roof site and communicating clearly with your contractor can make a big difference in both efficiency and outcome. Here are some key things to keep in mind:

  • Ensure the roof deck is accessible
Clear any obstructions near your home, like patio furniture, landscaping items, or vehicles, so the crew can safely access the roof and bring up materials.
  • Discuss problem areas with your installer
Point out any spots where you’ve seen leaks, ice dams, or other issues in the past, such as near valleys, eaves, or around chimneys or vents. This helps them prioritize where to apply the shield.
  • Ask about the condition of your decking
If you’re getting a full roof replacement, check that the decking will be inspected before installation begins. This helps identify any damage that should be repaired first.
  • Confirm material compatibility
Make sure your contractor is using a shield that works well with the rest of your roofing system. Not all membranes are suited for every type of shingle or underlayment.

By preparing ahead of time and working closely with your roofing professional, you’ll help set the stage for a successful installation. It’s a simple way to ensure your new Ice and Water Shield performs exactly as it should—protecting your Michigan home from leaks, ice, and weather-related wear for years to come.

Climate Considerations

In a state like Michigan, where our winters are long and snow and ice are the norm, ice and water shield isn’t just a good idea—it’s essential. The constant cycle of freezing and thawing can lead to ice dams, which trap water and cause it to seep beneath shingles. This shield provides a critical line of defense by sealing around nails and creating a watertight barrier. It’s especially important along eaves, valleys, and low-slope sections of the roof where water tends to collect. Even during heavy spring rains or late-season snowstorms, it helps protect against moisture intrusion that could lead to rot or mold.

Schoenherr Roofing Water and Ice Shield Protection on Roof

Areas of the Roof That Require Extra Protection

Some parts of the roof are more likely to get water damage than others. These vulnerable areas are places like roof valleys, eaves, and overhangs. Ice dams and pooling rainwater are often found in these spots. If you put a water shield like Ice and Water Shield on these areas, water can stay on top of the membrane and slide off into the gutters safely.

Other spots need attention, too, like the areas around chimneys and skylights. Using the shield at these points helps stop water intrusion near these features and makes them last longer. When you have a roof with almost no slope, using even more coverage with the water shield adds good protection. This will lower the chances of leaks and give you more peace of mind.

When to Consider Full Coverage

Covering the entire roof with a water shield is not always needed. But it can be a good idea in places that get severe storms or a lot of snow. Local building codes may require roof installation on the whole roof to handle extreme weather.

Still, homeowners need to be careful with this option. The shield can be a vapor barrier. If you do not have good ventilation, it can cause condensation problems. Many people find it works well to just put the shield on important spots like the eaves and roof valleys. This gives strong protection too. It is best to talk to a professional. They can help you know what areas you should cover to keep your roof in good shape.

Cost and Investment Considerations

Installing ice and water shield on a roof in Michigan does come with an added cost compared to standard underlayment, but it’s important to consider the long-term value it brings. Given the state’s frequent snowstorms, ice buildup, and freeze-thaw cycles, the potential for water damage is high, especially along eaves and in roof valleys. Ice and water shield acts as an extra layer of defense, helping to prevent leaks that can lead to issues like mold growth, damaged insulation, and even structural decay. What may seem like a higher initial investment often ends up saving homeowners from costly repairs down the line.

Beyond just protection, the addition of ice and water shield can add to a home’s overall appeal and durability. It may also play a role in reducing the likelihood of future insurance claims related to water intrusion. In many parts of Michigan, building codes require its use in certain areas of the roof, making it not only a smart preventative measure but sometimes a mandatory one. As a homeowner, if you’re looking to make a durable, long-lasting improvement to your roof, choosing to include ice and water shield is a wise and proactive decision.

The Long-Term Value of Ice and Water Shield

Knowing what a water shield is and how it is used can help keep your roofing system safe for longer. This membrane works by giving homeowners extra protection for their roofing. It helps keep water damage and bad weather conditions away from the roof. You can use the water shield on your whole roof or just in specific areas that need it most. Make sure the shield is put in the right way to get the most out of it. If you have questions or need help with your roofing or shielding project, you can ask for a free consultation to find out the best way for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Ice and Water Shield Be Installed in Cold Weather?

Yes, weather conditions do matter when you work on the roof. Still, you can put Ice and Water Shield on in cold weather if you get everything ready first and let a trusted roofing contractor do the job. Make sure the roofing material is dry before you start. If there is moisture on the roofing system, the water shield may not stick well to it.

What is Ice and Water Shield on a Roof?

The Ice and Water Shield is a type of roof underlayment. It works as a waterproof barrier on your roof. You put this layer of protection on your roof to stop leaks. It helps to shield the most vulnerable areas where leaks may happen. This helps your roof last longer and stay safe from water or problems with leaks.

Should You Cover Your Entire Roof with Ice and Water Shields?

You might think about putting a cover on your entire roof to have extra protection, but most times you do not need to do this. It is better to pay attention to the most important parts, like the valleys and eaves. Also, you should check your local building codes. Some places may say you have to fully cover the roof in certain cases.

When and Where Should You Install Ice & Water Shield?

Install a water shield on specific areas of your roof like roof valleys, chimneys, and eaves. This is very important when you put on a new roof, especially if you live in a place with harsh weather conditions. Using the shield on these vulnerable areas helps your roofing work better and last longer. This simple step keeps your home safe when the weather is rough.

Our experience with Schoenherr Roofing has been very pleasant. Our sales consultant, Nate and project manager, Josh H. were both professional and personable. We were very impressed with the excellent communication by Josh before, during, and after our project. The cleanup the roofing crew did was also outstanding. We love our new roof!

Josh H. one of the guys that works there happens to live down the street from my mother and noticed she had a few missing shingles. During the roof inspection he temporarily patched it in to give her a few extra months until she can afford it. Absolutely wonderful guy and didn’t ask for a dime, just wanted to save her from extra damages.

I would 100% recommend them to anyone interested in their services! They had great communication skills. They kept us updated with scheduling and progress pictures of what was completed. One of the days we were surprised with a terrible storm that popped up in the middle of the tear off/install. Even with the 50+ mph winds and extreme rain the guys successfully tarped off our house with no leaks! Also, they're very reasonably priced and went to great lengths to protect our landscape. Thanks for a great experience!

I contacted Schoenherr Roofing for an estimated on replacing my roof. They sent David Schafer to my residence. Dave explained his process. He entered the attic and videoed while speaking the issues he sees. He then got on my roof and videoed everything. I also had the shed looked at. When Dave was completed, he had a video that I could see. His findings and video explaining everything was great. Dave was very professional, polite and courteous. He answered all my questions. He came prepared with what he needed to do his job. Today we happy our roof was replaced by Schoenherr Roofing! They replaced the shingles on the house, garage and shed. On the house, all wood decking was replaced with a few on the garage. Ridge vent installed on the house and garage. Crew was here early as schedule and on time. I watched this five man crew work constantly with a break for lunch. My home is a two story colonial. This crew had to carry all the lumber and shingles to the top of the roof. Shingles carried up to top of the garage as. The crew leader (Luis) was very polite. He took pictures throughout sending them to his boss Chad. Chad then forward them to me to keep me up to date. Even views from the top of the roof where I couldn’t see. The crew did an outstanding job cleaning the area upon completion. All of this work by 5 men in one day (12 hrs). I could not have asked for a better experience. Thank You to everyone involved a Schoenherr Roofing!!

After doing some research and sifting through high presdure sales tactics from other vendors, i chose Schoenherr roofing. All of their laborers are in house employees versus 3rd party contractors. After commiting they assigned several people and kept me in the loop. During the tear out and install i was given pictoral updates on every aspect of the job, their pricing was in line with their competitors and they used state of the art materials designed for specific aspects versus 1 shingle does all. Best of all was material usage had no hidden addons and we stayed within budget, i believe 200 Lft of planking was in the quote and we used 160. No upsell on anything or special pricing tiers of quality, i got app. 1600 sqft of tier 3 impact shingled roof for $15,000.00 With drip edge and needed planking and the latest in ventilation technology. You can see in one picture the original roof in poor shape.

Their sales rep, Leo, is helpful, knowledgeable, and professional. He is clearly dedicated to his customers and is someone I could trust to provide me with an honest understanding of the whole project and its pricing. I received 5 different quotes from various local and chain roofing contractors. Schoenherr Roofing is slightly more expensive than average but their services, from start to finish, were above average. I was kept in the loop regarding every step of the process which included financing, a flexible appointment time, a pre-install and post-install inspection, material delivery, install, and clean-up. At every step they were prompt and thorough. The crew was extremely hard working and were able to set up, replace a house and garage roof, clean, and pack up in about 12 hours despite the heat. They provided me with real-time photos of their work as each step of the install was completed, which is something all construction contractors should take note of. I am happy that I paid a bit extra for the peace of mind I now have in a roof with a strong labor and material warranty installed by an experienced local business.

Overall, we had a positive experience with our roof replacement, but a few issues kept it from being excellent. Scheduling was easy, the consultant was on time and prepared, and the quote and financing options were competitive. The crew arrived on time, worked efficiently, and completed the roof quickly, even with two existing layers to remove. We also appreciated the progress photos and prompt follow-up with the invoice, financing paperwork, and final inspection scheduling. Our main concerns were communication, cleanup, and safety. We did not receive a response when we asked for a dumpster delivery time, which made planning garage access difficult. We were also told the generator and A/C units would be covered, but they were not. We also observed that no one working on the roof appeared to be using fall protection, which was concerning for work over 6 feet. The roof itself appears to have been installed efficiently and professionally.

Absolutely thrilled with the work done by Schoenherr Roofing! I had been struggling with a leaking roof for a while, and after several failed attempts by other contractors, I finally found someone who not only diagnosed the problem but fixed it with precision and professionalism. The issue turned out to be the chimney area, and instead of just patching things up, Caleb took the time to build a cricket around the chimney to divert water and prevent future leaks. The craftsmanship is top-notch, and the work was completed efficiently without any mess or disruption to my daily routine. What really stood out was their clear communication and dedication to making sure everything was done right. They explained the entire process, answered all my questions, and took care to ensure that the repair would provide a long-lasting solution. Since the repair, I’ve had no further issues, even during heavy rainstorms. I can finally rest easy knowing my roof is in great shape! I highly recommend Schoenherr Roofing for anyone in need of roofing services—they are skilled, reliable, and genuinely care about doing the job right. Thank you Caleb for saving my home from further damage!

Install or Replace an Asphalt Shingle Roof Schoenherr worked from dawn to dusk to complete the project in a very timely fashion. They came in $1090 under budget, having finished the whole job within one work day and three hours. They provided photos of the roof halfway through the project and at completion ? I would have appreciated a few 'before' photos, too. They provided a group text so that everyone involved could communicate and stay looped in. My only other quibble is that the finance person always neglected to cc my wife on emails, even though the home-improvement loan is in her name. Finally, after wrapping up the project, Schoenherr put everything in both yards back in place and cleaned the site really well. Sometimes it's worth paying a little bit more for quality service and execution. Sometimes, it's not even that much more!
