Schoenherr Road (locally pronounced “Shay’-ner”) is a major north-south thoroughfare on the east side of Metro Detroit. It begins at McNichols Street (near M-3) in Detroit, Michigan, and runs north as a paved road up to 26 Mile Road. Beyond that point, it continues as a dirt road until its northern terminus at 29 Mile Road.
Between Metro Parkway and just north of Hall Road, Schoenherr is a divided highway. The road is named after a German farming family who settled in the area in the 1840s. The family’s land was gradually acquired for the construction of the road, with the final parcels purchased to build Sterling Heights High School. The surname was Anglicized during immigration, and some descendants have since adopted this version of the spelling.
Interestingly, despite its spelling, Metro Detroit residents pronounce Schoenherr as “Shay-ner”—a departure from the original German pronunciation, “Shone-hair.”
Until the late 1980s, there was a short gap in Schoenherr Road—about a quarter-mile stretch between Utica Road and Clinton River Road. This was completed shortly before the closure of Kleino Bridge, located approximately one-eighth of a mile west of Schoenherr.
