Top 15 Highest Rated Roofers Serving Troy, MI (2026)
Finding a roofer in Troy isn’t exactly difficult. Figuring out which one you actually want working on your house is another story. There are companies
Alto sits about 17 miles southeast of our Grand Rapids office on Kraft Ave SE, roughly a 25-minute drive out into the country. That keeps this Kent County community and the farmland around it well within our range. We can get out for a free estimate, bring trucks and material without trouble, and come back for a follow-up or warranty visit when it's needed. When a storm rolls through, that reach also means we can respond rather than leaving you waiting. For a rural community this easy to reach, a roofer who covers the area regularly is worth a lot.
Alto is a small, unincorporated community along the northern edge of Bowne Township, in the rural southeast corner of Kent County. Founded in 1845 and once a stop on the railroad, it sits on some of the higher ground in the area, surrounded by the farms and open country that have defined this part of the county for generations. Its post office serves a wide swath of the surrounding townships, a reminder of how rural the area still is.
That setting gives Alto a practical mix of roofs. Older homes near the community center sit alongside farmhouses, rural properties, and the barns, pole barns, and outbuildings that come with working land, plus newer homes on larger lots. A roofer here has to be ready for an older home, a modern one, and a big agricultural roof span alike, and to travel a bit of country road to reach them.
West Michigan winters bring real snow load to Alto, and the freeze-thaw cycle that follows drives meltwater under shingles and into flashing over the season. On older or under-insulated homes, that same cycle builds ice dams along the eaves. Out over the open, higher farmland here, roofs also catch wind with little to slow it and the occasional hail that crosses the region most summers.
The older homes and farmhouses tend to show wear first, with aging flashing, worn or layered shingles, and dated decking underneath. Farm buildings bring large roof spans where a durable, low-maintenance system pays off, and metal roofing often makes good sense there. Balanced attic ventilation, fresh underlayment, and sound flashing are what carry an Alto roof through the seasons, whatever it sits on. On the farm buildings especially, metal roofing stands up to snow load and years of weather with little upkeep across a large span, which is why we suggest it so often out here. We're used to the drive and the mix of buildings a rural property brings, so a farm with a house, a garage, and outbuildings is a familiar kind of job for us, and the higher, open ground out here means wind is a real factor on these roofs.
We work the rural country southeast of Grand Rapids regularly, and we're glad to make the drive out to Alto. In a small community, a roof that fails a winter later becomes common knowledge fast, so we build each one to last and stand behind the work. That's the kind of follow-through you want from a roofer, wherever your home or barn sits.
Homeowners often ask when it’s time to think about getting a new roof. Here are a few common signs:
Shingles that are curled, cracked, crumbling, or missing
Water stains on ceilings or walls inside your home
Moss, mold, or algae growing on the roof
A roof that’s more than 20 years old
Significant storm damage
Starting from scratch or adding a new roof to an existing structure?
Common during new construction or home additions
Protects the structure from the elements
Provides a durable, properly installed roofing system

Both roof installation and roof replacement give you a new roof, but the process, cost, and considerations are different.
Roof Installation
Ideal for new construction or major renovations
Offers more flexibility in design and material choices
No old materials to remove, making it a cleaner process
Roof Replacement
Requires removing and replacing an existing roof
May involve structural reinforcements or code updates
Can boost energy efficiency and increase property value
Bottom Line: If you’re building a new home or addition, roof installation is the right choice. If your current roof is worn out or too damaged to repair, a replacement provides long-term protection and performance.
The cost of roof installation or repair depends on several factors, including the type of roofing material, the complexity of the project, and how accessible the roof is. For example, asphalt shingles are typically more affordable than slate or metal roofing, which affects the overall price.
If a roof is steep or has a complex design, it requires specialized tools and greater expertise, which can increase labor costs. Knowing these factors helps homeowners make informed choices that fit both their budget and long-term goals.
Roofing Material Choices
Asphalt shingles – Budget-friendly and the most commonly used option.
Slate or tile – Higher cost but extremely durable.
Understanding the cost of different materials helps homeowners select the option that best fits their budget.
Roof Size
Larger roofs need more materials, which raises the total cost.
Extra shingles, underlayment, and components add to overall expenses.
Roof Complexity
Roofs with multiple slopes, dormers, or detailed designs take more time and expertise.
Greater complexity increases both labor and material costs.
In Michigan, seasonal changes play a big role in roofing projects and their costs. Winter brings snow, ice, and freezing temperatures, which can make roofing work unsafe or even impossible. Because of this, contractors often have limited availability and rates may be higher during the winter months.
Spring and fall usually provide the best conditions for roofing jobs. With milder temperatures and less rainfall, the work can be done more efficiently, often at lower costs, with more contractors available.
By keeping these seasonal factors in mind, homeowners can plan their roofing projects at the right time, saving money and ensuring the work is completed smoothly and efficiently.
Choosing the right roofing service—whether installation or replacement—offers lasting benefits. It can save you money in the long run while giving you peace of mind. Quick, professional repairs prevent small issues from turning into major problems that could lead to a costly replacement. Although repair costs depend on the damage, they’re generally much lower than a full replacement.
With the right service, your roof will continue to protect your home effectively, preventing water damage, mold growth, and other issues caused by a failing roof. While DIY fixes might sound tempting, it’s always smarter to trust a professional roofing contractor for reliable advice and quality results.
Remember, investing in your roof is also an investment in your home’s value and long-term security. Concerned about your roof? Contact Schoenherr Roofing today for a free inspection and expert recommendations.
Yes. Our Grand Rapids office at 2828 Kraft Ave SE is about 17 miles northwest of Alto, roughly a 25-minute drive out into the country, so we serve the community and the surrounding farmland. You can reach the office at (616) 421-9687. We’re glad to make the drive out to this rural corner of Kent County.
Yes. Alto sits in rural farm country, and we regularly roof farmhouses along with the barns, pole barns, and outbuildings that come with working land. Metal roofing is often a durable, low-maintenance choice for the large roof spans on agricultural buildings, and we roof the whole property, not just the house.
Older farmhouses around Alto often reveal aging or plank decking, past additions, and layered roofing once the tear-off begins. Sitting on the higher, open ground common here, their roofs also face real wind, so they need materials and fastening suited to that exposure. We inspect the decking closely and build accordingly.
Often, yes. Metal roofing sheds heavy snow, stands up to the wind on Alto’s open ground, and lasts far longer than asphalt with little maintenance, which suits both farm buildings and exposed rural homes. We install both metal and asphalt systems and can compare the cost and lifespan for your specific building.
Alto sits on some of the higher, more open ground in southeast Kent County, so its roofs catch wind with little to break it, along with winter snow and the occasional hail. That exposure makes wind-rated shingles, tight edge and starter detailing, and solid fastening especially important for keeping a roof intact through a strong gust.
Yes. We regularly work in the smaller, more rural communities across the region, not just the larger suburbs, and Alto is a familiar part of our territory. The short drive out doesn’t change the quality of the work or the attention your roof gets.

Our experience with Schoenherr Roofing has been very pleasant. Our sales consultant, Nate and project manager, Josh H. were both professional and personable. We were very impressed with the excellent communication by Josh before, during, and after our project. The cleanup the roofing crew did was also outstanding. Josh H. one of the guys that works there happens to live down the street from my mother and noticed she had a few missing shingles. During the roof inspection he temporarily patched it in to give her a few extra months until she can afford it. Absolutely wonderful guy and didn’t ask for a dime, just wanted to save her from extra damages.Posted on Google![]()

I would 100% recommend them to anyone interested in their services! They had great communication skills. They kept us updated with scheduling and progress pictures of what was completed. One of the days we were surprised with a terrible storm that popped up in the middle of the tear off/install. Even with the 50+ mph winds and extreme rain the guys successfully tarped off our house with no leaks! Also, they're very reasonably priced and went to great lengths to protect our landscape. Thanks for a great experience!Posted on Google![]()

I contacted Schoenherr Roofing for an estimated on replacing my roof. They sent David Schafer to my residence. Dave explained his process. He entered the attic and videoed while speaking the issues he sees. He then got on my roof and videoed everything. I also had the shed looked at. When Dave was completed, he had a video that I could see. His findings and video explaining everything was great. Dave was very professional, polite and courteous. He answered all my questions. He came prepared with what he needed to do his job. Today we happy our roof was replaced by Schoenherr Roofing! They replaced the shingles on the house, garage and shed. On the house, all wood decking was replaced with a few on the garage. Ridge vent installed on the house and garage. Crew was here early as schedule and on time. I watched this five man crew work constantly with a break for lunch. My home is a two story colonial. This crew had to carry all the lumber and shingles to the top of the roof. Shingles carried up to top of the garage as. The crew leader (Luis) was very polite. He took pictures throughout sending them to his boss Chad. Chad then forward them to me to keep me up to date. Even views from the top of the roof where I couldn’t see. The crew did an outstanding job cleaning the area upon completion. All of this work by 5 men in one day (12 hrs). I could not have asked for a better experience. Thank You to everyone involved a Schoenherr Roofing!!Posted on Google![]()

After doing some research and sifting through high presdure sales tactics from other vendors, i chose Schoenherr roofing. All of their laborers are in house employees versus 3rd party contractors. After commiting they assigned several people and kept me in the loop. During the tear out and install i was given pictoral updates on every aspect of the job, their pricing was in line with their competitors and they used state of the art materials designed for specific aspects versus 1 shingle does all. Best of all was material usage had no hidden addons and we stayed within budget, i believe 200 Lft of planking was in the quote and we used 160. No upsell on anything or special pricing tiers of quality, i got app. 1600 sqft of tier 3 impact shingled roof for $15,000.00 With drip edge and needed planking and the latest in ventilation technology. You can see in one picture the original roof in poor shape.Posted on Google![]()

Their sales rep, Leo, is helpful, knowledgeable, and professional. He is clearly dedicated to his customers and is someone I could trust to provide me with an honest understanding of the whole project and its pricing. I received 5 different quotes from various local and chain roofing contractors. Schoenherr Roofing is slightly more expensive than average but their services, from start to finish, were above average. I was kept in the loop regarding every step of the process which included financing, a flexible appointment time, a pre-install and post-install inspection, material delivery, install, and clean-up. At every step they were prompt and thorough. The crew was extremely hard working and were able to set up, replace a house and garage roof, clean, and pack up in about 12 hours despite the heat. They provided me with real-time photos of their work as each step of the install was completed, which is something all construction contractors should take note of. I am happy that I paid a bit extra for the peace of mind I now have in a roof with a strong labor and material warranty installed by an experienced local business.Posted on Google![]()

Overall, we had a positive experience with our roof replacement, but a few issues kept it from being excellent. Scheduling was easy, the consultant was on time and prepared, and the quote and financing options were competitive. The crew arrived on time, worked efficiently, and completed the roof quickly, even with two existing layers to remove. We also appreciated the progress photos and prompt follow-up with the invoice, financing paperwork, and final inspection scheduling. Our main concerns were communication, cleanup, and safety. We did not receive a response when we asked for a dumpster delivery time, which made planning garage access difficult. We were also told the generator and A/C units would be covered, but they were not. We also observed that no one working on the roof appeared to be using fall protection, which was concerning for work over 6 feet. The roof itself appears to have been installed efficiently and professionally.Posted on Angie's List![]()

Absolutely thrilled with the work done by Schoenherr Roofing! I had been struggling with a leaking roof for a while, and after several failed attempts by other contractors, I finally found someone who not only diagnosed the problem but fixed it with precision and professionalism. The issue turned out to be the chimney area, and instead of just patching things up, Caleb took the time to build a cricket around the chimney to divert water and prevent future leaks. The craftsmanship is top-notch, and the work was completed efficiently without any mess or disruption to my daily routine. What really stood out was their clear communication and dedication to making sure everything was done right. They explained the entire process, answered all my questions, and took care to ensure that the repair would provide a long-lasting solution. Since the repair, I’ve had no further issues, even during heavy rainstorms. I can finally rest easy knowing my roof is in great shape! I highly recommend Schoenherr Roofing for anyone in need of roofing services—they are skilled, reliable, and genuinely care about doing the job right. Thank you Caleb for saving my home from further damage!Posted on Home Advisor![]()

Install or Replace an Asphalt Shingle Roof Schoenherr worked from dawn to dusk to complete the project in a very timely fashion. They came in $1090 under budget, having finished the whole job within one work day and three hours. They provided photos of the roof halfway through the project and at completion ? I would have appreciated a few 'before' photos, too. They provided a group text so that everyone involved could communicate and stay looped in. My only other quibble is that the finance person always neglected to cc my wife on emails, even though the home-improvement loan is in her name. Finally, after wrapping up the project, Schoenherr put everything in both yards back in place and cleaned the site really well. Sometimes it's worth paying a little bit more for quality service and execution. Sometimes, it's not even that much more!Posted on Home Advisor![]()
